The digital validation of plastic components is a decisive competitive factor in the modern automotive supply industry. An impressive example of this is the successful collaboration between Kromberg & Schubert Austria and WESTCAM in the use of Autodesk Moldflow (Adviser & Insight) injection molding simulation software
In this way, Simulation & Analysis also makes a significant contribution to sustainability by detecting errors at an early stage and producing components in a resource-saving manner.
Innovation for 120 years
Kromberg & Schubert can look back on over 120 years of company history and, with more than 50,000 employees at over 40 locations worldwide, is one of the leading system providers for wiring systems, special cables and plastics technology. The Austrian site in Oberpullendorf (Burgenland) not only develops plastic parts, but also designs the associated tools and produces the series parts – around 300 million injection molded parts a year on 39 machines.
With its own divisions for plastics technology, toolmaking and test equipment construction, Kromberg & Schubert Austria covers the entire value chain: from the idea to the design to the product ready for series production.
Why Moldflow? – The start of a strategic decision
Increasing quality requirements, more complex components and the pressure to shorten development times led Kromberg & Schubert to examine the use of a professional simulation solution at an early stage. Autodesk Moldflow was deliberately chosen as the market-leading software.
Initially, the basic version was used in mold making Moldflow Adviser. WESTCAM supported the site with an initial presentation and targeted training for selected employees from development, toolmaking and technology in St. Florian.
Initially – as is so often the case with new technologies – there was skepticism outside the immediate circle of users. However, the mood quickly changed with the first tangible successes: simulation gradually became an integral part of the development process.

“Moldflow has enabled us to make lasting improvements to our development processes. The simulation helps us to detect errors earlier, design tools better and ensure series stability. The collaboration with WESTCAM was a decisive success factor – technically competent, practical and based on partnership.”

Step-by-step expansion up to the top solution
With increasing experience, the possibilities of Adviser reached their limits. The logical consequence was the switch to Moldflow Insightlater even in the highest expansion stage.
This enabled Kromberg & Schubert not only to simulate filling and holding pressure processes, but also to analyze complex issues such as warpage, cooling and material behavior in detail.
A particular highlight was the examination of chemically foamed materials – an area in which the site broke new ground. The added value of simulation was particularly evident here, as new materials and processes could be digitally evaluated and optimized in advance.

“Kromberg & Schubert is a prime example of how simulation can be strategically and consistently integrated into the product development process. It is particularly impressive how the team in Austria has actively promoted new topics such as chemical foaming. We are happy to continue on this path as a reliable partner.”
Group-wide expansion and clear vision for the future
Today, Moldflow is not only used in Austria – other Kromberg & Schubert locations also use the software successfully.
The declared aim is to analyze every relevant plastic component with Moldflow in the early development phase.
Another strategic step is the planned direct link between the injection molding machine and simulation. Here, Kromberg & Schubert is working closely with machine manufacturer ENGEL a strong signal in the direction of digitally networked production.
Conclusion: A success story with a future
The partnership between Kromberg & Schubert Austria and WESTCAM impressively demonstrates how digital simulation not only reduces risks, but also enables innovation. With Autodesk Moldflow, the company is ideally equipped to successfully master future challenges in plastics technology.
